Frequently Asked Questions
Student questions:
1. What is the cost for the class?
The English classes are free. Students are required to purchase books - $40 for levels I, II, and III, $25 for pre-GED, $25 for GED, and $25 for Citizenship.
2. Do I have to come on both nights? Every week?
You are encouraged to come both nights. However, if work or other obligations exist, you should come at least one night a week consistently.
3. Is there a minimum number of classes that I must attend?
Attendance is taken. In order to learn, you must be there. If you are absent, you should call your teacher. Special Honors and Merit certificates are given to those who are consistent.
4. Do I have to start in the beginning of the semester?
Of course that is ideal. However we register students when they come and place them in appropriate groups.
5. Are the classes only for Spanish students?
The classes are for anyone who wants to learn English. Currently a majority of our students speak Spanish but we do have other students who speak other languages as well. All are welcome!
Volunteer questions:
1. Do I have to speak Spanish?
For teachers of beginner groups Spanish is helpful but not necessary. In fact we discourage those who speak Spanish from using it too frequently. Students need to hear and speak English. For some, it is the only place where this is done.
2. How many students will I have.
The average group size is six to eight students but class size may be fewer or more in some cases.
3. Is it always the same students?
Yes if you and they are consistent.
4. Do I have to volunteer both nights?
This is the ideal situation. However, if you can not, you will be paired with another teacher. Both of you will keep a record of what you have accomplished so that classes will be coordinated.
5. Am I obligated to volunteer for the whole year?
Of course this would be preferable for both you and the students. If not possible, we can work with it. When teachers have to be away, they advise the coordinator and arrangements are made for their students.
