Class Programs: Basic English Classes: Classes are taught in small learning groups according to ability. Evening classes are held on Monday and Wednesday from 8 to 9:30 PM at Marydell Faith and Life Center in Upper Nyack. Daytime classes occur at different times of the day according to the needs of students in Dominican Convent in Sparkill, One to One Center in Nyack, and other locations as arranged. Levels:
♥ Beginner-use packets developed by One to One. On completion students should be able to speak in the verb “to be” (for example—I am a teacher—You are a student) ♥ Level I - use text and activity workbook, “Side by Side” - Book 1. On completion, students are able to speak in the past tense.
♥ Level II - “Side by Side”-Book 2 - On completion, ability to use past and future continuous tense, imperatives, concentration on adverbs and adjectives.
♥ Level III - “Side by Side-Book 3 - On completion, ability to use present perfect tenses, gerunds, infinitives, and connectors.
♥ Level IV - McGraw Hill “Pre-GED”-Students begin to prepare for high school equivalency with a concentration in reading comprehension and writing.
♥ Level V-McGraw Hill “GED”-Continued development of reading and writing skills. Teachers use Social Studies sections for reading comprehension. Students are able to get assistance from skilled math and science teachers.
Citizenship Classes
Use Contemporary’s “Citizenship Now” - preparation for interview, writing from dictation, and questions on United States history. Classes arranged Computer Classes
Classes are available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings for two hour sessions. Classes are taught in English and Spanish. Students acquire general knowledge of the computer, keyboarding, internet access, and word processing. Computer lab of ten stations is located in Nyack. Cost of classes is $100 for twelve 2 hour sessions.
Children’s Program
Children attend while their parents are attending class. Older children receive homework assistance, read, and write. There are reading readiness activities for pre-school and kindergarten children. Children do crafts, play games, and have a snack. New mini-courses at 7 PM on Monday and Wednesday before English classes Mini-courses will begin in October Sewing, Knitting, Crocheting Health, Parenting, Yoga
Celebration of Cultural Events and Successes
During the year we celebrate the ethnicity of students and teachers. We celebrate La Fiesta de los Reyes in January. We share foods that are native to different countries. All receive gifts.
In June students receive certificates of honor, merit, and participation. Again we celebrate with music and delicious ethnic foods.
